Hamburg Dungeon VS. Berlin Dungeon

Hamburg Dungeon vs. Berlin Dungeon: Which one should your family visit?

So, you’re planning a family trip to Germany and you’re wondering, “Dungeon? That sounds terrifying, are we about to traumatize our children or just give them the most entertaining history lesson ever?” Don’t worry because we have been there, asked that, and thankfully, I lived to tell the tale.

Germany has not one, but two famous Dungeons, Hamburg and Berlin. Both are theatrical, immersive experiences that blend creepy storytelling with interactive fun, and while they’re designed to be spooky, they’re also a bit tongue in cheek. Think history lesson meets haunted house with actors who are far too enthusiastic about scaring parents more than kids.

Let’s break it down, parent to parent, because if you’re going to voluntarily walk into a dungeon, you should at least know what you’re signing up for.

Live actors at the Dungeon

The Similarities

Both Hamburg Dungeon and Berlin Dungeon follow the same recipe:

  • Live Actors: Who drag you (sometimes literally) through different themed rooms.

  • Dark and Spooky Sets: That bring to life some of the scarier moments of history.

  • Audience Participation: Which means yes, you might be the one put on “trial” while your child giggles mercilessly at your expense.

  • Scares with Humour: Nothing too extreme, more “boo, gotcha!” than therapy inducing trauma.

If you’ve been to a Dungeon attraction in London, Edinburgh, or Amsterdam, you know the vibe, it’s theatrical horror comedy designed to make history stick in your head whilst also making you scream (and maybe pee just a little).

Both locations also recommend ages 10 and up, though honestly, it depends on your child. If your kid laughs in the face of scary movies, they’ll probably love it. If they can’t sleep after an episode of Scooby-Doo, maybe wait a year or two.

The Differences

Here’s where things get interesting, because Hamburg and Berlin Dungeons lean into very different histories.

Hamburg Dungeon dark boat ride

Hamburg Dungeon

Hamburg’s Dungeon is all about the city’s dark maritime past, you’ll encounter:

  • The Black Plague: Sweeping through the city.

  • Great Fire of Hamburg: Which, spoiler alert, involves lots of fake smoke.

  • The Inquisition: Where you might find yourself being questioned a little too closely.

  • The Torture Chamber: Kids find it hilarious, parents slightly less so.

  • Boat Ride in the Dark: Yes, this is true, which is honestly the highlight if your kids are thrill seekers.

Berlin Dungeon drop ride

Berlin Dungeon

Berlin Dungeon, on the other hand, zooms in on Prussian and Berlin specific history. Expect:

  • Creepy tales: Of the 30 Years’ War.

  • Encounters: With the serial killer Carl Grossmann (don’t worry, the gore is implied, not shown).

  • The Plague Doctor: Why are plague doctors always equal parts funny and terrifying?

  • The Courtroom: Where someone in your family will be put on trial.

  • Our Personal Favourite: A drop ride at the end, which will have your stomach doing acrobatics while your teenager screams, “AGAIN, AGAIN!”

Language: Is Hamburg Dungeon and Berlin Dungeon in English?

Hamburg Dungeon doesn’t always offer shows in English. They’re not as frequent as the German language ones, so you’ll want to check ahead before going and contact the establishment before going.

Berlin Dungeon, on the other hand, typically runs English performances as well (again, double check before you go). If your kids are learning German in school, it’s honestly a fun immersive way to test how much they’re actually paying attention. Win win!

How Long Are They?

Both Hamburg and Berlin Dungeon run for about 70 to 90 minutes (check out the links prior to find out more in depth details about the length of times regarding both establishments). We reckon 70 to 90mins is the sweet spot, as its long enough to feel like you’ve really experienced it, but not so long that the kids start whispering “Is this over yet?”

Parent to Parent Verdict

Here’s the deal, if your family is into history, theatre, and a little spooky thrill, both Dungeons are absolutely worth it.

  • Go to Hamburg Dungeon: If your kids love pirates, shipwreck stories, or anything involving water rides in the dark.

  • Go to Berlin Dungeon: If your crew prefers ghostly legends, wars, and a final “drop” that’ll leave them buzzing with adrenaline.

Would we go again? Honestly, yes! It’s educational without feeling like school, entertaining without being over the top, and just the right level of spooky for tweens and teens. Plus, watching your partner get dragged up on stage to be “tortured” is a memory worth every euro.

Final Thoughts

Book your tickets online in advance (they’re cheaper and you can snag the English language slots). You can also possibly plan something light hearted after maybe ice cream works wonders when you’ve just explained to your child why plague doctors wore those creepy bird masks.
