6 Ways to Save Money on Family Attractions

A family day out can quickly become expensive once you add tickets, meals, parking and a few unexpected extras. But enjoying a brilliant family adventure doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune!

Here are six simple ways to make your family attraction budget go further.

1. Book Your Tickets in Advance

Buying tickets at the entrance can sometimes cost considerably more than booking online. Many theme parks and family attractions offer cheaper advance tickets, particularly when you choose less popular dates.

Before booking, compare single-day tickets, family packages and multi-day options. A two-day ticket might offer better value if you’re planning to explore the whole park. Planning a UK theme park visit?

2. Plan Your Food Budget Before You Arrive

Food is one of those expenses that can sneak up on families. A quick lunch, a few drinks and an afternoon snack can make a noticeable difference to your spending.

Check restaurant menus before visiting, set a realistic meal budget and find out whether you’re allowed to bring your own food. Some attractions have picnic areas, while others restrict outside food.

Our family dining guides can help you plan ahead:

3. Don’t Forget Parking and Travel Costs

Finding an affordable attraction ticket is great, but how much will it cost to get there?

Check parking charges, fuel, train fares, public transport and any additional travel costs before deciding which attraction offers the best value.

If you’re driving, look for advance parking discounts and check whether parking is included with your ticket or annual pass.Visiting California?

4. Compare Day Trips With Overnight Stays

Sometimes travelling home after a long day is the cheapest option. Other times, staying overnight can make more sense, especially if you’re travelling a considerable distance.

Compare the full cost of both options, including accommodation, transport, meals and attraction tickets.

Look out for hotel and ticket packages, but don’t assume they’re automatically cheaper. Compare the package price with booking everything separately.

An overnight stay might cost more overall, but it could give your family more time to enjoy the attraction without rushing.

5. Check Family Deals, Discounts and Annual Passes

Before paying full price, check whether the attraction offers family tickets, toddler admission, promotional discounts or annual passes.

If you’re planning several visits throughout the year, an annual pass could work out cheaper than purchasing individual tickets each time.

However, always check restrictions, excluded dates and any extra charges. A discounted ticket isn’t necessarily the best deal if it doesn’t suit your family’s plans.

6. Set a Budget for Souvenirs and Unexpected Extras

Souvenirs, arcade games, ride photos and little treats can quickly increase the cost of your day out.

Agree on a spending limit before arriving, especially if you’re visiting with children. You could even give each child a small souvenir allowance to help them decide what they’d really like.

It’s also worth setting aside a little extra for unexpected expenses, such as additional transport or refreshments.

Our tip: Use the free Family Attraction Budget Calculator above to estimate your total spending before you travel. You can include tickets, food, travel, accommodation and extras, then view your budget in your preferred currency.

Make Every Family Adventure Count

Saving money doesn’t mean missing out on the fun. A little preparation can help you choose attractions that suit your family’s interests, avoid unnecessary expenses and make the most of your day together.

Plan ahead, spend wisely and enjoy the adventure!

FAQ's

1. How much should I budget for a family day out?

The cost of a family day out depends on the attraction, number of visitors, transport and food choices. A free museum or local park could cost very little, while a major theme park may require a much larger budget.

Start by calculating admission tickets, food, travel and parking. Then allow extra money for souvenirs or unexpected expenses. Use our free Family Attraction Budget Calculator above to estimate the total for your family.

2. What costs should I include when visiting a theme park?

Your theme park budget should include admission tickets, food, drinks, transport and parking. You may also want to account for souvenirs, ride photos, lockers, queue-skipping passes and accommodation if you’re staying overnight.

Some attractions charge separately for additional experiences, so check what’s included in your ticket before booking. Our calculator lets you add optional costs to create a more realistic estimate.

3. Can I use the calculator for attractions outside the UK?

Yes! Our Family Attraction Budget Calculator is designed for families planning adventures in different countries, including the United States, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia.

Simply choose your destination country and attraction, then enter your estimated costs. You can also select “Other attraction” if your chosen destination isn’t listed.

4. Does the family attraction calculator convert currencies?

Yes. You can enter your estimated costs in one currency and display your total in another, including British pounds (GBP), euros (EUR), US dollars (USD) and Danish kroner (DKK).

The calculator attempts to retrieve reference exchange rates automatically. If a rate is unavailable, you can enter a verified rate manually.

Exchange rates may differ from those offered by your bank or card provider, so treat the converted total as an estimate.

5. Are the attraction ticket prices updated automatically?

No. The calculator does not currently retrieve live attraction ticket prices. Instead, you enter the ticket prices you’ve found, allowing you to calculate a budget based on your chosen dates and family size.

Ticket prices can change depending on the season, availability, special events and booking conditions. Always check the attraction’s official booking website for current prices before purchasing tickets.

6. Can I use this calculator for a family holiday?

Yes! Although the calculator is designed primarily for family attractions and days out, you can also use it to estimate the cost of a short family holiday.

Include attraction tickets, food, transport, accommodation and additional spending. If you’re travelling abroad, you can convert your estimated total into your preferred currency.

For longer holidays involving several destinations, we recommend creating a separate budget for each attraction or activity and combining the totals in your overall holiday plan.
